AI Didn’t Kill Good Design—Generic Marketing Did

By Wayne Brown

Over the past year, a new phrase has been making the rounds in marketing circles: “flyer slop.” Some call it “flyer garbage.” It refers to the flood of AI-generated flyers filling social media—bright colors, random gradients, generic icons, inconsistent fonts, and layouts that all seem strangely familiar. You can usually spot them within seconds.

As someone who owns a marketing agency, I have mixed feelings about it.

I love AI. In fact, I use ChatGPT almost every day. It helps me brainstorm ideas, overcome writer’s block, organize projects, and even improve my own writing. AI has become an incredible tool for businesses of every size.

But that’s exactly what it is—a tool.

The problem isn’t AI. The problem is when businesses mistake a tool for a marketing strategy.

A flyer isn’t successful because it looks flashy. It’s successful because it communicates the right message to the right audience while reinforcing a company’s brand. That’s something AI can’t magically create without direction.

I’ve noticed an interesting trend with a few of my long-term clients. When AI image generators first became popular, there was excitement about creating quick graphics for everything. But after a while, a couple of them started realizing something important.

Their branding that we spent years promoting – mattered.

The logos, colors, typography, messaging, photography style, and visual identity we spent years developing weren’t just decorative. They were creating recognition and trust with their customers. Every time they replaced those elements with another generic AI-generated design, they looked a little less like themselves.

Strong branding isn’t built in one Facebook post or one flyer. It’s built through consistency over months and years.

Ironically, the rise of AI has made professional branding more valuable—not less.

When everyone has access to the same design tools, the businesses that stand out aren’t the ones generating the most graphics. They’re the ones with a recognizable identity that customers remember.

That’s where experienced designers and marketers still make the difference.

AI can generate ten flyer ideas in a minute. It can’t sit with a business owner, understand their audience, develop a long-term brand strategy, or ensure every piece of marketing works together toward a common goal.

The businesses that will thrive in the AI era won’t be the ones replacing their marketing with artificial intelligence. They’ll be the ones combining AI’s efficiency with human creativity, experience, and strategic thinking.

At WOW! Creative Group, we embrace AI because it makes us better at what we do. It helps us work faster, generate ideas, and spend more time focusing on what truly matters—creating marketing that is authentic, memorable, and uniquely reflects each client’s brand.

The goal has never been to create the fastest flyer.

The goal is to build a brand that people recognize, trust, and remember long after they’ve scrolled past another piece of “flyer slop.”
